Physical Education (Historical View)
Primarily viewed as the education of the human body, where a muscular physique was the hallmark of a physically educated individual.
Physical Education (Modern Definition
The planned, progressive learning that takes place during timetabled school curriculum time, delivered to all pupils. It involves both "learning to move" and "moving to learn," with the context for this learning being physical activity, including sport and dance.

Individuals must master movement to facilitate learning and acquire knowledge through physical activities
Education Through Movement
Utilizing a culturally rich array of activities and processes—such as games, dance, gymnastics, athletic sports, and outdoor pursuits—as mediums through which teachers can achieve desirable educational outcomes
Biological Function (of PE):
Advancement of growth and development through movement
Integrative Function (of PE):
Personality integration through selected physical activities.
Social Function (of PE)
Transmission of values and standards consistent with society’s ideals.
Physical Development (Objective of PE):
Acquisition and development of physical skills, attained through regular exercise and vigorous activities, enhancing quality of life and maintaining body fat levels.
Mental Development (Objective of PE):
PE activities enhance mental alertness and decision-making.
Emotional Development (Objective of PE)
Provides opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery, building confidence, self-reliance, and self-control
Social Development (Objective of PE):
Promotes interaction with others, developing traits like cooperation, sportsmanship, friendliness, leadership, respect, and honesty
Spiritual & Moral Development (Objective of PE):
Helps develop inner self and soul, encouraging appreciation of what is good and beautiful, and leading to personal meaning and purpose in life.
CHED Memorandum Order No. 39:
Establishes policies, standards, and guidelines for PE in tertiary education, aligning with Republic Act No. 7722 (Higher Education Act of 1994). It promotes holistic student development, physical fitness, health, social skills, personal growth, and balanced lifestyles.

A set of courses including Movement Competency Training (PATHFit 1), Exercise-Based Fitness Activities (PATHFit 2), Dance and Recreational Activities (PATHFit 3), and Sports, Martial Arts, Outdoor and Adventure Activities (PATHFit 4)
