Molecular biology
The branch of biology that deals with the structure and function of the macromolecules that are essential to life
Monomer
A molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
Polymer
A substance which has a molecular structure build up chiefly or completely from a large number of smaller units bonded together
Examples of monomers
Glucose, amino acids, nucleotides, and monosaccharides
Examples of polymers
Starch, glycogen, cellulose, proteins and chromosomes
Monomer → Polymer
Condensation reaction
Condensation reaction
Two molecules combine to form a large molecule, releasing a water molecule in the process
Polymer → Monomer
Hydrolysis reaction
Hydrolysis reaction
Water breaks a compound into two smaller molecules
