Paradigm
A way of thinking about the world, defined as a set of theories that are tied together.
Psychoanalytic Paradigm
A psychological paradigm centered on unconscious instincts, finding acceptable ways to satisfy instincts, and the idea introduced by Floyd that childhood experiences influence individuals as adults.
Eros
The unconscious life instinct within the psychoanalytic paradigm.
Thanatos
The unconscious death instinct within the psychoanalytic paradigm.
Behavioral Paradigm
A paradigm asserting that observable behaviors are all that matters.
Cognitive Paradigm
A psychological paradigm emphasizing that thoughts matter and using a computer as a metaphor for the mind.
Cognitive Neuroscience
A field that links how we think with brain anatomy, problems with brain structure, hormones, and neurotransmitters.
Evolutionary/Behavioral Genetics
A paradigm focused on the evolution of adaptive behaviors and mental processes, noting that we inherit behaviors and mental processes even if they may not be adaptive to us today.
Humanistic Psychology
A psychological perspective with an emphasis on the innate goodness of people and a focus on the growth and potential within all of us.
Eclectic Paradigm
A non-major paradigm in psychology that picks and chooses the best explanations from each individual paradigm.
Multiply Determined Behavior
The concept that there isn't just one reason for what a person does, but rather behavior is determined by multiple causes.
Steps to Do Science
The sequence of identifying a research problem, posing a question, turning the question into a hypothesis based on an existing theory, designing and conducting a study to test the hypothesis, examining data, explaining findings using existing or new theories, and communicating results.
