Cell Theory
The principle that all cells arise from pre-existing cells and DNA is transmitted during cell division.
Differentiation
The process by which cells become specialized in structure and function.
Stem Cells
Cells that can divide and differentiate into various specialized cell types.
Binary Fission
A form of asexual reproduction in prokaryotes where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
Eukaryotic Cell Cycle
The cycle consisting of interphase and mitotic phase where cell growth and division take place.
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results in two genetically identical daughter cells.
Cytokinesis
The process where the cytoplasm of a parent cell divides into two daughter cells following mitosis.
Proto-oncogenes
Genes that normally stimulate cell division but can become oncogenes when mutated, leading to cancer.
Tumor Suppressor Genes
Genes that regulate cell division and prevent uncontrolled cell growth, such as the p53 gene.
Checkpoints in the Cell Cycle
Regulatory points in the cell cycle that ensure proper division and DNA integrity.
