Gear (speed) ratio formula
The calculation defined as the Number of teeth on driver gearNumber of teeth on driven (follower) gear
Driver gear
The gear that initiates the movement and turns the other gear in a meshing pair.
Driven (follower) gear
The gear that is being turned by the driver gear.
1:1 Gear Ratio
The gear ratio produced when two meshing gears both have an equal number of teeth, such as 14 teeth each.
Gearing down
A gear configuration that results in an increase in torque and a decrease in speed (e.g., a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio).
Gearing up
A gear configuration that results in an increase in speed and a decrease in torque (e.g., a 3:4 ratio).
2:1 Gear Ratio
The result of a 15 teeth gear turning a 30 teeth gear, which characterizes gearing down.
3:4 Gear Ratio
The result of a 16 teeth gear turning a 12 teeth gear, which characterizes gearing up.
3:1 Gear Ratio
The result of an 8 teeth gear turning a 24 teeth gear, which characterizes gearing down.
