What is the modiolus?
The modiolus is the point at the corner of the mouth where eight muscles meet, forming a distinct conical prominence.
Which muscles contribute to the formation of the modiolus?
The muscles are Levator anguli oris, Depressor anguli oris, Orbicularis oris, Risorius, Buccinator, Zygomaticus major, Quadratus labi superioris, and Quadratus labi inferioris.
What happens to the corner of the mouth during contraction of the modiolus?
Contraction of the modiolus presses the corner of the mouth against the premolars, thus closing the occlusal table in front.
What could cause the protrusion of the mandible?
The protrusion of the mandible can occur from a reduction in occlusal vertical dimension and unbalanced occlusion, which can be partly anatomical and partly habitual.
How does restoration of the occlusal vertical dimension affect mandibular protrusion?
Restoration of the occlusal vertical dimension can automatically reduce the apparent protrusion of the mandible by allowing the chin to move posteriorly.
What is the anatomical significance of the occlusal table?
The occlusal table is bounded by cheek tissues buccally, tongue lingually, pterygomandibular raphe distally, and contraction of the corner of the mouth mesially.
