How many symptoms are required for a diagnosis of Major Depressive Episode?

5 or more symptoms during the same 2 week period. One must be depressed mood or lost of interest/pleasure

what should not be included when evaluating symptoms of depression?

symptoms clearly caused by another medical condition

what is symptom 1 of depression?

depressed mood most of the day, nearly everyday (sad, empty, hopeless, tearful)

what is symptom 2 of depression?

loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities most of the day, nearly every day

what is symptom 3 of depression?

significant weight loss/gain or appetite change nearly everyday

what is symptom 4 of depression?

insomnia or hypersomnia nearly everyday

what is symptom 5 of depression?

psychomotor agitation or retardation (noticeable by others) nearly every day

what is symptom 6 of depression?

fatigue or loss of energy nearly everyday

what is symptom 7 of depression?

feelings of worthlessness or excessive/inappropriate guilt nearly everyday

what is symptom 8 of depression?

trouble concentrating or indecisiveness nearly everyday

what is symptom 9 of depression?

recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, or specific plan

what conditions must be ruled out before diagnosing Major Depressive Episode?

effects of a substance or another medical condition

what do Criteria A-C represent?

A Major Depressive Episode

can normal grief mimic depression symptoms?

yes, but a true depressive episode may occur alongside grief

what other mental disorder must be ruled out?

Schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, schizophreniform, delusional, or other psychotic disorders

can a person have had a manic or hypomanic episode and still be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder?

No. A history or manic or hypomanic episodes excludes the diagnoses (unless substance- or medically-induced)
