Apex
Highest point on top of the head
Asymmetrical balance
Established when two imaginary halves of a hairstyle have an equal visual weight, but the two halves are positioned unevenly; asymmetry can be horizontal or diagonal
Balance
Related to establishing equal or appropriate proportions to create symmetry; in hairstyling, it is the relationship of height to width
Bang area
Also known as fringe area; triangular section that begins at the apex, or high point of the head, and ends at the front corners
Coil
Very tight curl
Concave profile
Carving inward; prominent forehead and chin, with other features receded
Contrasting lines
Horizontal and vertical lines that meet at a 90-degree angle and create a hard edge
Convex profile
Curving outward; receding forehead and chin
Curved lines
Lines moving in a circular or semicircular direction; used to soften a design
Design line
Defines form and space; presence of one line nearly always means that there are others involved
Design philosophy
Includes objectives, goals, and step-by-step planning developed by artists to mold their unique vision into a piece of art
Design texture
Wave patterns that must be taken into consideration when designing a style
Diagonal back
Type of diagonal line that creates movement away from the face
Diagonal forward
Type of diagonal line that creates movement toward the face
Diagonal lines
Lines positioned between horizontal and vertical lines; often used to emphasize or minimize facial features
Directional lines
Lines with a definite forward or backward movement
Emphasis
Also known as focus; place in a hairstyle where the eye is drawn first before traveling to the rest of the design
Form
Hairstyle's mass or general outline that has length, width, and depth; also referred to as volume
Hair typing system
Classification using numerical and alphabetical hierarchy to describe hair texture based on straight, wavy, curly, coily patterns; elasticity; porosity; and density
Harmony
Creation of unity in a design; most important of the art principles; holds all the elements of the design together
Head form
Also known as head shape; mass or general outline of a hairstyle; three-dimensional, having length, width, and depth
Horizontal lines
Lines parallel to the floor and relative to the horizon; create width in hair design
Nape
Back part of neck; hair below occipital bone
Parallel lines
Repeating lines in a hairstyle; may be straight or curved
Parietal ridge
The head’s widest area, starting at the temples and ending at the bottom of the crown; also known as the crest area
Profile
Outline of the face, head, or figure seen in a side view
Proportion
Comparative relationship of one thing to another; harmonious relationship among parts or things
Reference points
Mark where the surface of the head changes, such as the ears, jawline, occipital bone, and apex; used to establish design lines
Rhythm
Regular pulsation or recurrant pattern of movement in a design
Single lines
Hairstyle with only one line, such as the one-length hairstyle
Space
Area surrounding the form or the area the hairstyle occupies
Straight profile
Neither convex nor concave
Symmetrical balance
Two halves of a style; form a mirror image of one another
Transitional lines
Usually curved lines that are used to blend and soften horizontal or vertical lines
Vertical lines
Lines that are straight up and down; create length and height in hair design
