How do users consume pop culture?
• People interpret PC differently based on who they are
• Encoding = the process of creating a message for others to understand
• Decoding = the process of interpreting messages
Recall example video from Mama Hope about African representation
Shows 3 African boys and showing us how most people see them was “war machines” but then shows us that they are actually normal people just like us who play sports and go to school
Individual components of competence
Experience = its not always about knowing everything but knowing what to ask
Motivation = Having the want to know more about people, yourself, and different cultures
Knowledge= Be knowledgeable on yourself, others, and how you/others speak
Attitudes = Tolerance for ambiguity, empathy, non-judgmental
Ways to apply knowledge
Dialogue = having a conversation with someone who is different from you
Allies = support/advocate for others
Coalitions= being people/organizations together to work towards a common goal
Social Justice = ensuring there is fairness and justice for everyone
Forgiveness = Forgiving those who have mistreated you or you mistreating someone

• Only knowing a single-story shapes peoples perceptive and reinforces stereotypes
• Shares personal stories of her only thinking book characters where whiter and blue eyes and her roommate feeling bad for her and asking what her “tribal music” is
• Tells us that by having different views and storytelling is important to make us all connect with each other
