Natural Disasters
are adverse events that result from natural processes of earth such as typhoons, floods, earthquakes, landslides, volcano eruptions, storm surges, tsunamis, and other geologic processes.
El Niño
Phenomenon caused by warm ocean surface water temperature that develops in the central and east-central equatorial pacific; severe drought
La Niña
The ocean surface water temperature cools and causes intense rainfall and floods; Intense rainfall/ flooding
Typhoon
tropical cyclone
Storm surge
Abnormal increase of water level in seashores when a storm nears coastal lines
strong winds brought by low pressure
Causes of storm surge
Flooding
caused by a strong typhoon, sudden and intense rain, or heavy and prolonged rainfall. overflowing and clogging of canals, river and various waterways
Strong Typhoons
Cause of flashfloods
Landslides
occurs when there is heavy and continuous rainfall in high places, volcanic eruptions, or earthquakes.
Volcanic eruptions
occurs when material is expelled from a volcanic vent or fissure.
Earthquake
is a sudden, rapid shaking of the earth caused by the breaking and shifting of rock beneath the earth’s surface
Geohazards
naturally occurring geological pheonomena that pose danger to people’s lives, properties, infrastrusture, and communities.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR)
They made geohazard maps to indicate which areas are prone to natural danger or natural disasters.
Camiguin and Sulu
Two provinces that are at high risk to volcanic eruption
because it is a small island
Why does Camiguin have the highest risk at volcanic eruption?
Sulu
most number of active volcanoes in its area
Tsunami
series of enormous seismic sea waves caused by underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcani eruption.
