What is osmosis?
Net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution), through a partially permeable membrane

What is a dilute solution and what is a concentrated solution?
Dilute solution: low concentration of solutes, more water
Concentrated solution: high concentration of solutes, less water
What happens when plant cells are placed in a solution of high solute concentration (low water potential)?
Water moves out the plant cell by osmosis and becomes flaccid
Very concentrated solution: plasmolysed
What happens when plant cells are placed in a solution of low solute concentration (low water potential)?
Plant is turgid
What happens when rbc are placed in an isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solution respectively?
Isotonic: normal
Hypotonic: (low solute concentration) haemolysis
Hypertonic: (high solute concentration) crenation
