Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
Definition: a common viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and airways (sinuses, nasal passages, pharynx, and larynx). The vast majority of URTIs are caused by viruses.
Symptoms: cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal congestion, runny nose, fever, scratchy/sore throat, and nasal breathing

Neonatal Sepsis
Definition: a blood infection that occurs in an infant younger than 90 days old
Symptoms: breathing problems, body temp. changes, diarrhea or decreased bowel movements, low blood sugar, reduced movements, reduced sucking (referring to babies), seizures, slow or fast heart rate, swollen belly area, vomiting, yellow skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice).

Definition: a painful type of ear infection occuring when the area behind the eardrum (middle ear) becomes inflamed and infected

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Definition: caused by bacteria in the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. This bacteria can build up and cause an infection if the body's immune system can't fight it. In infants, this could have been caused by a dirty diaper or if the baby was wiped from back to front.
Symptoms: pain in the bladder, groin, lower abdomen or pelvis, pain can occur during urination, foul smelling urine, frequent urination, bladder spasm, cloudy urine, dark urine, persistent urge to urinate, sense of incomplete bladder emptying, blood in urine, fatigue, fever, malaise, cramping, or vaginal irritation

Definition: Viral Gastroenteritis - also called a stomach flu, is an intestinal infection. Bacterial Gastroenteritis - occurs when bacteria causes an infection in your gut and causes inflammation in your stomach and intestines. Parasitic Gastroenteritis - caused by large numbers of gastrointestinal nematodes that reside in the person's abdomen and intestines.

Intussusception
Definition: a rare condition in which one part of the intestines slides into another part. This is known as telescoping and this blocks food and fluids from passing through.

Cellulitis
Definition: a common skin infection that is potentially serious upon progression (if bacteria in the skin spread rapidly). Treatment must include antibiotics and without it, cellulitis can be life-threatening. Staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria are the most common causes of this illness.

Mononucleosis (Mono or Kissing Disease)
Definition: a contagious disease most commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr virus but other viruses can cause similar symptoms. Mononucleosis is spread through saliva and things such as kissing, sharing drinks, or sharing food. Treatments for Mono include: pain medications, rest, fluids, over-the-counter pain and fever-reducing medications

Appendicitis
