Photokeratitis Symptoms
Delayed onset after UV exposure — typically several hours later.
Bilateral eye pain.
Marked photophobia.
Epiphora.
Foreign body / gritty sensation.
Redness.
Blepharospasm.
Possible mild ↓VA.
Usually history of welding/UV exposure without adequate PPE
Corneal Abrasion Symptoms
Redness
Acute unilateral pain
Foreign body sensation

Epiphora

After trauma/FB
↓VA.
Scleritis symptoms
Redness
Severe deep pain ± pain on eye movement
Photophobia +
Diffuse/violaceous redness

Episcleritis symptoms
Mild discomfort

FBS ± photophobia
Normal VA
Sectoral/diffuse bright red superficial vessels.
± tender mobile red vascular nodule.
Bacterial conjunctivitis symptoms
Rapid onset
Unilateral → bilateral
Red eye
Mucopurulent/purulent yellow-green discharge
Crusting on waking
Mild irritation.
Usually normal VA, minimal pain/photophobia.
Papillae ± SPK/marginal infiltrates.
Viral conjunctivitis symptoms
Acute
unilateral → bilateral
red eye
watery discharge
follicles
irritation/FBS ± mild photophobia.
Often URTI/contact history + preauricular LN.
VA usually normal.
Adenovirus → possible SPK/keratoconjunctivitis.
Allergic conjunctivitis symptoms
Bilateral + INTENSE ITCHING
Redness
Watery/stringy discharge
Chemosis ± lid oedema.
Usually normal VA.
Often recurrent/seasonal + atopy/rhinitis.
Chlamydial conjunctivitis symptoms
Chronic/persistent
Often unilateral
Red eye
Mucopurulent discharge
Follicles ± preauricular LN.
Usually mild discomfort + normal VA.
May fail topical antibiotics.
Blepharitis symptoms
Usually bilateral/chronic
burning
grittiness/FBS
mild photophobia
crusting/red lid margins
often worse AM.
epiphora
fluctuating VA,
DED.
Dacryocystitis symptoms
Acute → sudden painful, red, tender medial canthal/lower lid swelling + epiphora + mucopurulent discharge/reflux from punctum ± fever.
PVD symptoms
Acute floaters ± flashes/photopsia
Possible blurred/hazy vision.
Usually painless
Unilateral.
Floaters = dots/lines/cobwebs;
Flashes = lightning/arcs from vitreoretinal traction.
Retinal tear/ break symptoms
Acute flashes
New/increased floaters ± blurred vision/vitreous haemorrhage.
Usually painless.
