Synapse
place where neuron connects to another neuron or effector
two types
chemical and electrical
Electrical synapse
presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons bound together by gap junctions
fast: no synaptic delay in passing electrical signal
Chemical Synpase
presynaptic neuron’s axon terminal produces signal
postsynaptic neuron receives signal (commonly with one of it’s dendrites
synaptic cleft: fluid-filled gap between neurons, events of synaptic communication, NT molecules released from vesicles of synaptic knob, NT diffuses across cleft binds to postsynaptic receptors, binding of NT initiates postsynaptic potential (a graded potential)
synaptic delay: takes time for these events
