Simple Machine
A device that changes how work is done, including changing the direction, magnitude, or distance of a force.
Mechanical Advantage (MA)
A measure of how much easier or more difficult it is to do work with a machine.
Inclined Plane
A flat surface tilted at an angle, used to help raise or lower objects.
Lever
A simple machine consisting of a rigid bar pivoted around a fulcrum, used to apply a force.
Pulley
A simple machine made of a wheel on an axle or shaft that is designed to support movement and change the direction of force.
Work
The measure of energy transfer that occurs when an object is moved over a distance by an external force.
Resistance Work (WR)
The work done without the aid of a machine.
Effort Work (We)
The work done when using a machine to exert a force over a distance.
First Class Lever
A type of lever where the fulcrum is positioned between the effort and the resistance forces.
Fixed Pulley
A pulley that does not move with the rope and changes the direction of the force applied.
