Lymph nodes
Act as filters in the lymphatic system, they contain macrophages and phagocytes to destroy pathogens.
Lymphatic System
Protects the body by removing pathogens from lymphatic stream and “policing” other body fluids.
Lymphatic system contains:
Lymphatic vessels, nodes, tissues, and organs
Thymus
Where T cells (help produce blood) differentiate
Bone marrow
Location of stem cells that give rise to immune system, where B cells differentiate.
Tonsils
Function similar to nodes - fight infection, contain white blood cell which helps kill germs.
Spleen (curves around left side of stomach)
Red pulp - filters blood for old, damaged, or infected red blood cells
White pulp - producing and filtering immune cells
Immune response characteristics
Memory
Specificity
Differentiation of self and non self
Innate immune response
Initial and immediate, macrophages and phagocytes that you are born with by simply reconnecting non self. Causes initial inflammation.
Acquired immune response
Memory and specificity. Lymphocytes (b and T cells ) create antibodies to specific pathogens antigens that they encounter in the body.
