Erythrocytes
Red blood cells that carry oxygen in the blood.
Heme group
A component in hemoglobin that contains iron and binds oxygen.
Pulmonary ventilation
The process of inspiration (inhaling) and exhalation (exhaling).
External respiration
The exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood.
Internal respiration
The exchange of gases between blood and the tissues.
Regulation of blood pH
The function of the respiratory system that modifies carbon dioxide levels.
Carbonic anhydrase
An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate ions.
Olfaction
The sense of smell, which is processed by the olfactory nerve.
Nasal concha
Projections from the nasal septum that increase surface area for filtering and humidifying air.
Vestibule
A small space just inside the nostrils that leads to a larger nasal cavity.
Eustachian tube
A tube that connects the nasopharynx to the middle ear, helping to equalize pressure.
Thyroid cartilage
A large cartilage in the larynx, commonly referred to as the Adam's apple.
Cricoid cartilage
The ring-shaped cartilage of the larynx that sits below the thyroid cartilage.
Epiglottis
A flap of elastic cartilage that prevents food from entering the trachea during swallowing.
Vocal folds
Also known as true vocal cords, these structures vibrate to produce sound.
Glottis
The opening between the vocal folds responsible for sound production.
Bronchopulmonary segment
The portion of a lung supplied by a tertiary bronchus.
