Ectoderm
The outer layer of cells in the developing embryo, which forms nervous tissue and epidermis.
Neural tube
A structure formed from the ectoderm that develops into the central nervous system.
Meninges
A series of membranes that protect the central nervous system, including the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Fluid contained within the brain ventricles, produced by the choroid plexus, crucial for protection and nourishment of the brain.
Neural groove
A structure that forms as the neural plate folds during the development of the neural tube.
Anterior neuropore
The opening at the front end of the neural tube that closes during embryonic development.
Lissencephaly
A neurological condition characterized by a smooth brain surface due to defective neuronal migration during development.
Microcephaly
A condition characterized by a smaller than average head circumference, due to pre- and postnatal factors.
Telencephalon
The anterior part of the forebrain, which develops into structures including the neocortex.
Notocord
A rod-like structure that provides support and is essential in the early development of the spine.
