what are the different types of catheters?

straight cath, indwelling catheter, triple lumen catheter, coude catheter

what are straight caths used for?

obtain urine sample for analysis. diagnose infection of kidney infection. drain residual urine found on a bladder scan. empty a continent urinary diversion. drain the bladder of a quadriplegic or paraplegic

how are straight caths used?

they are one time use

what are triple lumen catheters used for?

bladder irrigation after prostate or bladder surgery. flushes clots

what is a coude catheter used for?

used for obstruction or enlarged prostate. placed by provider

what are the indications for indwelling catheters?

acute urinary retention. accurate i and o in critically ill patients. perineal wound healing. end of life comfort. immobilized patients

what are the contraindications for catheters?

blood at the meatus. gross hematuria. urethral trauma. severe urethral pain. patient refusal

how do you prevent a CAUDI?

insert only if necessary. remove asap. maintained closed system. keep bag below bladder. use sterile technique. anchor catheter to leg. replace in 2 weeks if still required

what is a suprapubic catheter used for?

surgically placed if urethral catheterization is not possible. clean daily with soap and water

what should you assess for in a suprapubic catheter?

redness, drainage, infection

what are the reasons for external catheters in women?

they reduce cautis

why are condom catheters used in men?

less likely to lead to bacteremia, uti, and death

what are the risks of external catheters?

skin necrosis, penile strangulation, urethrocutaneous fistulas, dermaitis, skin erosion, pain, and localized infection

what should you remember to do with a condom cath?

change daily

does a catheter require a order?

yes

when should you empty a patient's catheter?

when 2/3 full or sooner

when should you notify the md?

if the pt hasn't voided in 6 to 8 hours after removal of catheter

when should you replace a catheter?

after 2 weeks if still required

when can you get a urine specimen from the foley bag?

within 1 hour of insertion
