Which scientist developed the classification system, and how are different organisms grouped under it?

Carolus Linneaus developed the system. Organisms are grouped using rules to consistently assign names based on physical and behavioural features.

What are the eight levels of the classification system in order from largest to smallest?

Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

What is the binomial name for humans?

Homo sapiens

Which parts of the classification system are used to generate binomial names, and how must they be formatted?

The Genus and species. The Genus is capitalised, and the name uses italics (or is underlined if handwritten).

How is the term 'species' defined?

A group of living organisms that can interbreed, exchange genes and produce fertile offspring.

Why are Canis lupis and Canis lupis familiaris considered closely related?

They belong to the same genus (Canis), which is shown in their name, meaning they differ only at the species level.

What genus does the tiger belong to?

Panthera

What genus does the domestic cat belong to?

Felis

Why has the classification system changed over the years?

As new organisms and new structural and behavioural features were observed, the classification system changed and other Kingdoms and Phyla were added.

How does the classification system used by the Yolngu people differ from the Linnean system?

The Yolngu people classified objects according to features they observed and considered important and essential, such as grouping things 'able to move by themselves' (which included the Sun, Moon, and animals). The Linnean system does not include non-living things.
