What is the thyroid gland?
Function: produces thyroxin and calcitonin
Location: C5 - T1 level
Blood supply: superior and inferior thyroidal artery
What is thyroxin?
A hormone produced by the thyroid gland that needs iodine, controls rate of metabolism
What is calcitonin?
A hormone produced by the thyroid gland that helps lower calcium levels in the blood (calcitonin stimulates osteoblasts and take calcium out of bone)
What is the parathyroid gland?
Function: produces parathyroid hormone (PTH), controls P and Ca+2 metabolism
Location: 4 on each side of the external thyroid capsule (2 upper, 2 lower)
What is a goiter?
The enlargement of the thyroid gland due to iodine deficiency
What does the parathyroid hormone do?
The secretion of PTH increases osteoclast activity when blood calcium content is low
What is a thyroidectomy?
Removal of thyroid due to cancer
Needs supplementation
