What is the definition of geography?
The study of Earth's physical features, human activities, and how they interact.
What are the two main branches of geography?
Human Geography (study of people, cultures, and human activities) & Physical Geography (study of landforms, climate, and natural processes).
What are the 5 themes of geography?
Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Regions.
Mapping Skills
What are the two main types of maps?
General Purpose Maps (show natural and human-made features, e.g., road maps) & Thematic Maps (focus on a specific topic, e.g., climate maps).
What are the three types of map projections?
Mercator Projection (distorts size, used for navigation), Peters Map Projections (The Peters Projection is an equal-area map that preserves land size but distorts shape. Areas near the equator look stretched horizontally, while regions near the poles appear stretched vertically.), and Winkel Tripel Projection (minimizes distortion, used for world maps).
Locating Places on a Map
What are the cardinal, intermediate, and minor points?
Cardinal: N, S, E, W. Intermediate: NE, NW, SE, SW. Minor: NNE, ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, NNW.
What is a compass rose?
A diagram showing directions on a map, including degrees (N = 0ยฐ, E = 90ยฐ, S = 180ยฐ, W = 270ยฐ).
What is an alphanumeric grid?
A system using letters and numbers to locate places on a map (e.g., B4).
Latitude & Longitude
What is the difference between latitude and longitude?
Latitude: Runs east-west, measures north-south (parallel). &Longitude: Runs north-south, measures east-west (meridians).
What are the important lines of latitude?
Equator (0ยฐ), Tropic of Cancer (23.5ยฐN), Tropic of Capricorn (23.5ยฐS), Arctic Circle (66.5ยฐN), Antarctic Circle (66.5ยฐS), North Pole (90ยฐN), South Pole (90ยฐS).
What are the important lines of longitude?
Prime Meridian (0ยฐ), International Date Line (180ยฐ).
Why do we have latitude and longitude?
To pinpoint exact locations on Earth using coordinates.
Scale
What are the three types of scales used on maps?
Ratio Scale (e.g., 1:100,000), Linear Scale (a line showing distance), Verbal Scale (e.g., 1 cm = 10 km).
How do you convert cm to km on a map?
Multiply by the scale factor (e.g., 1 cm = 50 km means 2 cm = 100 km).
How do you convert km to cm?
Divide by the scale factor (e.g., 100 km รท 50 = 2 cm).
Time Zones
What are the 6 time zones of Canada?
Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic, Newfoundland.
How many degrees of longitude does each time zone cover?
15ยฐ per time zone.
How do time zones work in Canada?
Moving east = add 1 hour per zone. Moving west = subtract 1 hour per zone.
What makes Newfoundlandโs time zone unique?
It is 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Time (not a full hour difference).
Map of Canada
What are the provinces and territories of Canada?
10 Provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador.
3 Territories: Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut.
What are the capital cities of Canadaโs provinces & territories?

Alberta - Edmonton
Saskatchewan - Regina
Manitoba - Winnipeg
Ontario - Toronto
Quebec - Quebec City
New Brunswick - Fredericton
Nova Scotia - Halifax
