What is a cell?
The basic unit of structure and function in a multicellular organism.
tissue
A group of differentiated cells that have a similar structure and function.
What is an organ?
A group of tissues that have been adapted to perform a specific function.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together to carry out a specific function.
What is the function of Epithelial Tissue?
Protection against infection, fluid loss, and injury. Facilitates the absorption of gases and nutrients.
Connective Tissue
Connects and supports organs, transports materials around the body, stores energy and fights infection.
Muscle Tissue
Provides structural support to the body, movement, and generating heat.
Nervous Tissue
Responds to environmental and internal stimuli and transmits nerve impulses that control movement.
What is the function of the Stomach?
Secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. Stomach muscles contract and mix food to enhance digestion.
What is the function of the Heart?
Pumping blood through the vessels of the circulatory system.
What is the function of the Skin?
Protect against pathogens. Senses and coordinates responses to environmental stimuli. Erect hairs to regulate body temperature. Store fat and transport nutrients to cells.
What is the function of the Brain?
Processes sensory information and coordinates the response to stimulus. Secretes hormones that regulate body temperature, hunger and thirst.
Respiratory System
exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide with the environment and the circulatory system transports the oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body.
Excretory System
consists of organs which remove metabolic wastes and toxins from the body.
Reproductive System
The human organ system responsible for the production and fertilization of gametes (sperm or eggs).
