Great Leap Forward
Mao was impatient with the limited success of his 5 year plans so he called on the citizens of China to extend a super-human effort to increase farm and industrial output. This put an immense amount of pressure on the Chinese. Mao required peasants to live on communes where 25000 people would live together to increase population. Bad weather and other factors led to a famine which killed up to 30 million Chinese.

Goal to purge China of “bourheois” or non-revolution tendencies. He urged young Chinese to experience the revolution firsthand much like his generation. In response teens formed groups known was the Red Guards waving copies of Maos little red book. They targeted people in authority, from party leaders to factory managers, teachers, writers and artists. The red guards feared the nation. schools and other places closed and the economy slowed.

After a bit of economic freedom, some Chinese were now demanding greater political freedom too. Young Chinese took the streets of Tiananmen Square in Beijing to protest. The government then sent in troops and tanks and thousands were killed or wounded. China’s communist leaders were determined to maintain control of the country.
