Step 1
Explains procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Step 2
Privacy is provided with a curtain, screen, or door.
Step 3
Instructs client to inform candidate if pain experienced during exercise.
Step 4
While supporting arm at the elbow and at the wrist, raises client’s straightened arm from side position upward toward head to ear level and returns arm down to side of body (flexion/extension) (AT LEAST THREE (3) TIMES unless pain is verbalized). Moves joint gently, slowly and smoothly through the range of motion, discontinuing exercise if client verbalizes pain.
Step 5
While supporting arm at the elbow and at the wrist, moves client’s straightened arm away from the side of body to shoulder level and returns to side of body (abduction/adduction) (AT LEAST THREE (3) TIMES unless pain is verbalized). Moves joint gently, slowly, and smoothly through the range of motion, discontinuing exercise if client verbalizes pain. Signaling device is within reach and bed is in low position. After completing skill, washes hands.
Step 6
Ensures the signaling device is within reach for the client during the procedure, and keeps the bed in a low position for safety during the exercise.
Step 7
After completing the skill, the candidate must wash their hands to maintain hygiene and prevent infection.
