Why Do I Need to Learn CPR?
Acting quick, before an ambulance arrives to help; Good to know for any situation to help potentially save a life.
The 4 R's
Risk, Recognize, React, Resuscitate.
What is a Heart Attack?
Damage to the heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply due to blocks in the arteries.
Blocked coronary artery
Blood not being pumped or circulating in the heart; The muscle of the heart has no oxygen and can't contract.
What is Cardiac Arrest?
Heart stops beating temporarily; a sudden and unexpected loss of heart function.
Consequences of Cardiac Arrest
Leads to a rapid loss of consciousness and breathing.
Immediate intervention for Cardiac Arrest
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation.
What is CPR?
An emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation.
Purpose of CPR
To manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing.
What is Defibrillation?
The use of an electrical current to help your heart return to a normal rhythm.

Automated External Defibrillator.
What is a Stroke?
Your brain's equivalent of a heart attack, happening when there's an issue with blood flow to part of your brain.
Causes of Stroke
When blood vessels are blocked or because of bleeding in your brain.
FAST
F- Face drooping; A- Arm weakness; S - Speech difficulty; T - Time to call 911.
Risk Factors: Smoking
Leading cause of heart disease in Canada; Causes lung cancer; Second-hand air pollution; Stinky breath.
Risk Factors: High Blood Cholesterol
Too much cholesterol can cause heart disease or stroke.
Effects of High Blood Cholesterol
Means lots of fat in the blood; Some fat is produced by the body; other fat comes from food.
What you can do for High Blood Cholesterol
Eat vegetables, fruits & grain products; reduce fat in diet; exercise.
Risk Factors: High Blood Pressure
Can damage your heart and blood vessels; Increases chances of a heart attack or stroke.
Causes of High Blood Pressure
Heredity, diet, stress; Get it checked regularly.
Risk Factors: Diabetes
Affects the level of sugar and fat in your blood.
Management of Diabetes
Eat properly, follow doctor's instructions.
Risk Factors: Obesity and Lack of Exercise
Obesity: heart has to pump harder all the time to move blood around.
Importance of Exercise
Your heart is a muscle, it works better if you keep fit and active.
Risk Factors: Stress
Affects the body in very physical ways; Stress over a long period of time can cause the body to break down.
Signs of a Heart Attack
5 Ps: Pain, Pale skin, Puffing, Pooped, Puking.
