Who were the Gentry during the Elizabethan Era?

Land-owning wealthy men who made up 2% of the population but owned 50% of the land. They lived in large houses with 50 rooms, oak panelled walls and large glass windows, ate exotic foods, and many worked as Justices of the Peace.

Who were the Middling Sort during the Elizabethan Era?

Those who led comfortable lives, but were not as rich or powerful as the gentry. In towns they were tradesmen or craftsmen, and in the countryside they were yeoman farmers. They lived in 5-10 roomed houses and ate beef and pork.

Who were the Labouring Poor during the Elizabethan Era?

50% of the population who did not have regular work, but got seasonal jobs on farms. They lived in small 1 or 2 room houses, ate pottage and rye bread, and suffered greatly during poor harvests.

What was family life like during the Elizabethan Era?

Couples usually got married in late 20s or mid 30s. Wives were to obey husbands and helped them with their work if they were poor/middling sort. Elizabethans relied on their close family or their neighbors in times of need. Rich children went to school from age 7, poorer children worked from age 7.

What were the key aspects of the Poor Law of 1601?

Based on laws passed in local areas before e.g. York in 1588. Justices of the Peace collected the poor rate, which was used to support the poor. Begging was forbidden and beggars who traveled outside of their parish were whipped and sent back. Impotent poor looked after in almshouses. Work provided for the able bodied. People who refused to work were forced to do hard labor.

Noblemen who ensured people obeyed Elizabeth’s laws and raised an army for her if she needed it.

What were the causes of increased poverty during the Elizabethan Era?

Huge population increase after 1580, wheat prices soared, harvest failures, downturn in demand for English cloth further increases unemployment, and plague further adds to economic problems.
