Germinates
It grows and becomes what was once a seed, producing sprouts and leaves as it becomes more complex.
Seed
The plant structure from which a new plant grows; germination begins from the seed.
Embryo
An early stage of development of an organism; the notes refer to it as a developing entity (the ‘cute little embryo’ in the diagram).
Ventral
The underside or belly side of the embryo; the portion being observed when described as ventral.
Gonad
The primary sex organ (such as testes or ovaries); in the diagram it is shown as separate from the ducts.
Ducts
The reproductive tubes or channels that develop separately from the gonads in this context.
Chromosomes
Structures that carry the genetic instructions for what a cell is supposed to do.
Steroid producing cell
A cell that synthesizes steroids (as described in the notes).
Physiology
The branch of biology dealing with how living systems function; the lecture applies genetic ideas to physiology.
Development
The process by which something becomes more complex (e.g., germination leading to a more developed embryo, and gonads/ducts forming).
