Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
A chemical molecule containing three phosphate groups linked by high-energy bonds that stores usable energy for cellular work and represents the charged state in the cell energy cycle.

Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP)
The discharged-state molecule in the cellular energy cycle that recombines with an inorganic phosphate group and energy during cellular respiration to form ATP.
High-Energy Bonds
Chemical bonds located between phosphate groups in ATP, denoted by a tilde symbol ≁, which release usable energy for cellular processes when broken.
Metabolism
The sum total of all biochemical reactions that occur in the body.
Catabolism
Metabolic processes involving the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, such as glucose breaking down into \n\text{CO}_2 and \n\text{H}_2\text{O}, releasing energy.
Anabolism
Metabolic processes that build complex molecules from simpler ones, such as synthesizing proteins from amino acids, which require energy provided by catabolic reactions.
Cellular Respiration
A series of regulated metabolic pathways in which glucose or intermediate compounds are catabolized in the cytoplasm and mitochondria to transfer energy into ATP.
ATP/ADP Cycle
A cellular process that functions analogously to a rechargeable battery, where ATP represents the charged state and ADP represents the discharged state.
Assimilation
The cellular incorporation of absorbed simple molecules, such as amino acids, into functional proteins and cellular components, powered by ATP.
Matrix
A non-living, protein-based material—also referred to as intercellular cement—synthesized and secreted by cells into the extracellular space to hold adjacent cells together.

Cellular Adhesion
A fundamental aspect of cellular interdependence where adjacent cells bind together through a secreted non-living matrix.
Intercellular Communication
The signaling mechanism between cells and tissues necessary to maintain physiological balance across the organism.

Insulin
A hormone secreted by pancreatic cells into the bloodstream when glucose levels rise, binding to liver cell receptors to signal glucose removal and storage.
