Public Health Informatics

The systematic application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice, research, and learning. It focuses on population health rather than individuals, emphasizing disease prevention rather than treatment.

Public Health Nursing

Focuses on population health through continuous surveillance and assessment of the determinants of health with the intent to promote health and wellness; prevent disease, disability, and premature death; and improve neighborhood quality of life

Public Health Informatician (PHI)

A public health professional who works either in practice, research, or academia and whose primary work function is to use informatics to improve population health.

Public Health Nurse Informatician (PHNI)

Combines the competencies of a Public Health Informatician (PHI) and nursing informatics, specializing in nursing informatics and possessing skills in supporting the establishment of systems to improve public health surveillance through access to clinical care information.

Assessment (Public Health)

Includes activities of surveillance, case finding, and monitoring trends and is the basis for decision-making and policy development by public agencies.

Policy Development (Public Health)

Involves broad community involvement in formulating plans, setting priorities, mobilizing resources, convening constituents, and developing public health policies.

Assurance (Public Health)

Covers activities that verify the implementation of mandates or policies and guarantees that the provision of necessary resources is provided to reach the public health goals.

NETSS

An epidemiologic surveillance project that began by the CDC, in cooperation with the CSTE and epidemiologists in 6 states with the goal to demonstrate the effectiveness of computer transmission of public health surveillance case-based data between state health departments and the CDC

NEDSS (National Electronic Disease Surveillance System)

An initiative by the CDC, the CSTE, and state and local public health departments that began work on information system standards to advance the development of efficient, integrated, and interoperable surveillance systems at the state and local levels.

Electronic Laboratory Results (ELR) System

A system for laboratory staff to report results to health departments as authorized and involves sending digital laboratory reports often from laboratories to local public health departments and healthcare partners

NEDSS-Base System (NBS)

A platform developed by the CDC for public health surveillance functions, processes, and data integration in a secure environment.

HL7 CDA (Health Level Seven Clinical Document Architecture)

A document mark-up standard, which is a set of rules that define how to embed instructions within a context document to control its structure and formatting and specifies the structure of a clinical document for the purpose of exchange.

Immunization Information System (IIS)

Confidential, computerized, information systems that allow for the collection of vaccination history and provides immediate access by authorized users to a child's current immunization status

Tuberculosis Electronic Information System

A system is created to develop real-time surveillance systems to monitor disease trends, identify outbreaks, and assess the effectiveness of interventions for Tuberculosis

National TB Surveillance System

An electronic incidence system that collects 49 data items on newly diagnosed verified cases of TB in the United States.

TB Genotyping Information Management System (TB GIMS)

A laboratory-based approach that is used to analyze the genetic material of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Electronic Disease Notification System

A centralized electronic reporting system that notifies the U.S. state and local health departments and screening clinics of the arrival of immigrants requiring medical follow-up.
