Contemporary Art
Art made today by living artists, created from the 1970s to the present day, reflecting current culture, identities, technologies, and global issues.
Modern Art
Art created roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s that emphasizes the artist's personal vision, innovation, and experimentation with new styles and techniques.
Neo-Realism
A movement of modernism observed and named by the artist-writer E. Aguilar Cruz.
Social Realism
An art movement aimed at exposing sociopolitical issues by depicting the reality of the masses and themes of inequality and repression.
Neoclassic
A style employing Greco-Roman ideals of beauty and proportion with refined realistic techniques and theatrical effects, often featuring historical or mythological subjects.
Integrative
A characteristic of contemporary art where the artist is free to integrate any medium, art form, or style without being limited by trends.
Process-based
A characteristic of contemporary art that emphasizes the development of a concept and the process of realizing an idea rather than focusing solely on the final product.
Site-specific
An artwork whose meaning has a direct relationship to the specific location where it is seen or experienced.
Collaborative
Art created through the involvement and cooperation of two or more artists.
Interactive
Art that recognizes the audience's potential to change or add to the meaning of the work.
Installation
A method involving real space where various forms and mediums are arranged to convey intent, not restricted to a two-dimensional plane.
Mixed Media
A technique in which different materials are used together in the creation of an artwork.
Performance Art
An art form where the artist executes work in front of a live audience using movement, space, and spontaneity.
