Integral Protein
A type of membrane protein that is integrated throughout the entire cell membrane, difficult to remove.
Peripheral Protein
A type of protein that is attached to the exterior of the cell membrane, easily removable.
Lipid Bilayer
A double layer of phospholipids that makes up the cell membrane.
Channel Protein
An integral protein that allows ions or molecules to pass through the cell membrane without the use of energy.
Carrier Protein
An integral protein that carries substances into or out of the cell, can go against the concentration gradient.
Glycoprotein
A protein with a sugar chain attached, involved in cell signaling and recognition.
Concentration Gradient
The process of particles moving through a solution or gas from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Lipid-Bound Protein
A rare type of protein that is attached to the interior of the cell membrane and interacts with the cell's own environment.
Homeostasis
The ability of a cell to maintain a stable internal environment.
Phospholipid
A type of lipid molecule that is a key component of cell membranes, forming the lipid bilayer.
