Federation
The process by which multiple previously independent states or colonies came together to form a single, unified government and nation.
Immigration Restriction Act 1901
23 December 1901, new migrants had to sit a 50-word dictation test. Even if they had passed in english, they could be made to sit the test again in a different language until they failed.
Dictation Test
Administered 805 in 1902-03 with 46 candidates passing the test, and 554 times in 1904-09 with only 6 people successful. After 1909 no person passed.
Pacific Islanders Labourers Act 1902
Aimed to regulate and ultimately prohibit the entry and residency of labourers from the pacific islands.

A law designed to allow British people to migrate to Australia and to limit all other migration. This lasted till the 1960s and was removed in 1975.

Meant that immigrants had to live like Anglo - Australian in public, but could follow their own cultural practices at home.
Multiculturalism
From the mid 1970s on, the policy towards immigrants shifted towards multiculturalism. This resulted in an increase of Asian immigration.
Assimilation
Where a group gives up its own customs and attitudes and adopts those of the prevailing culture.
