Regional terms (Figure 1.4)

Anatomical regions of the human body shown in (A) anterior view and (B) posterior view.

Abdominal region

Area over the abdomen that is inferior to the diaphragm and superior to the bony pelvis (Word root: Abdomin- = "abdomen").

Acromial region

Area over the lateral part of the shoulder that contains the acromion of the scapula (Word root: Acrom- = "highest point," "peak").

Antebrachial region

Anterior forearm (Word root: Broch- = "arm").

Antecubital region

Anterior upper limb between the forearm and arm, over the elbow joint (Word root: Cubit = "elbow").

Axillary region

Area in and around the axilla (armpit) (Word root: Ax = "armpit").

Brachial region

Anterior and posterior arm (between the elbow and the shoulder) (Word root: Broch- = "arm").

Buccal region

Lateral portions of the face corresponding to the cheeks (Word root: Bucco- = "cheek").

Calcaneal region

Heel of the foot (Word root: Calcon- = "heel").

Carpal region

Wrist (Word root: Corp= = "wrist").

Cephalic region

Entire head from the chin to the top of the head (Word root: Cephal = "head").

Cervical region

Neck (Word root: Cery= = "neck").

Cranial region

Top of the head, or the portion of the skull that encases the brain (Word root: Cran = "head," "skull").

Crural region

Anterior leg (or the shin) (Word root: Crun = "leg").

Digital region

Fingers or the toes (Word root: Digit = "fingers").

Femoral region

Thigh (Word root: Fem = "thigh").

Frontal region

Forehead (Word root: From = "forehead").

Gluteal region

Buttock (Word root: Glut = "the rump").

Inguinal region

Area along the inguinal ligament that divides the pelvis from the thigh (Word root: Inguin = "grain").

Lumbar region

Lower back (Word root: Lumb = "loin").

Mammary region

Area around the breast (Word root: Mamm = "breast").

Manual region

General area of the hand (Word root: Moo = "hand").

Mental region

Chin (Word root: Mont = "chin," "mind").

Nasal region

Nose (Word root: Mas = "nose").

Nuchal region

Ridge that runs along the back of the skull at the superior boundary of the occipital region (Word root: Nuch- = "nape").

Occipital region

General area of the back of the skull (Word root: Occipit = "back of the skull").

Oral region

Mouth (Word root: Or = "mouth").

Orbital region

Area around the eye (Word root: Orbit= = "circle").

Otic region

Area around the ear (Word root: Ok = "car").

Palmar region

Anterior hand (the palm of the hand) (Word root: Palm- = "palm of the hand").

Patellar region

Anterior part of the knee over the patella (kneecap) (Word root: Patell- = "little plate").

Pedal region

Foot (Word root: Ped- = "foot").

Pelvic region

Anterior pelvis (Word root: Pelv- = "basin" or "bowl").

Plantar region

Bottom of the foot (Word root: Plant- = "sole").

Popliteal region

Posterior side of the knee joint (Word root: Poplit- = "knee").

Pubic region

Area over the pubic bone of the pelvis (Word root: Pub- = "genital area/groin").

Scapular region

Area over the scapula in the superior back (Word root: Scapul- = "shoulder").

Sternal region

Area in the middle of the chest over the sternum (Word root: Stern- = "chest").

Sural region

Posterior part of the leg (the calf) (Word root: Sur- = "calf").

Tarsal region

Proximal foot and ankle region (Word root: Tars- = "ankle").

Thoracic region

General chest area (Word root: Thorac- = "chest/thorax").

Umbilical region

Area around the umbilicus (belly button) (Word root: Umbil- = "navel").

Vertebral region

Area over the vertebral column (spine) (Word root: Vertebr- = "spine").

Arm

Portion of the upper limb from the elbow to the shoulder.

Forearm

Portion of the upper limb from the elbow to the wrist.

Leg

Portion of the lower limb from the knee to the ankle.

Lower limb

Entire portion of the body from the hip to the digits of the foot.

Thigh

Portion of the lower limb from the hip to the knee.

Upper limb

Entire portion of the body from the shoulder to the digits of the hand.
