Bill of Rights — Amendments 1–10

1st Amendment

Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

2nd Amendment

Protects the right to keep and bear arms.

3rd Amendment

Prevents the government from forcing people to house soldiers in their homes during peacetime.

4th Amendment

Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures and requires warrants to be based on probable cause.

5th Amendment

Protects rights such as due process, protection from double jeopardy and self-incrimination, and requires compensation when private property is taken for public use.

6th Amendment

Guarantees rights for people accused of crimes, including a speedy and public trial, an impartial jury, knowing the charges, questioning witnesses, calling witnesses, and having a lawyer.

7th Amendment

Protects the right to a jury trial in certain federal civil cases.

8th Amendment

Protects against excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.

9th Amendment

Says people have rights beyond those specifically listed in the Constitution.

10th Amendment

Reserves powers not given to the federal government to the states or the people.
