Complementary Proteins
Protein sources, such as whole wheat bread, soy, or dairy, that are okay on their own, but are great when paired together.
Side Chain
The structural component that differentiates one amino acid or protein from another.
Nitrogen
An element found in protein, but not in carbohydrates or fats, which the body must convert and excrete in urine to avoid fatal toxicity.
Glutamine
An amino acid readily available in digestible protein food sources, making individual supplementation generally unnecessary.
Hemoglobin
Spherical proteins in the blood that carry oxygen, whose structural shape dictates their function.
Muscle Recovery Ratio
A nutritional proportion of 1gram of protein to 3 or 4grams of carbs, recommended for consumption within 15minutes for optimal muscle repair.
Structural Role of Protein
The essential function of protein in repairing tissue and maintaining physical structures like skin, hair, nails, and muscle.
Transporters
Proteins that act as specialized carriers to move substances throughout the body.
