What does environmental health comprise of ? What are the determinant of environmental health ?
Environmental health comprises 包括 those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, biological, social, and psychosocial factors in the environment (WHO).
It also refers to :
the theory and practice of assessing, correcting, controlling, & preventing those factors in the environment that can potentially affect adversely the health of present and future generations (WHO).
Environment = All of the external factors affecting an organism.
These factors including biotic and abiotic factors, what are they ?
living organisms (biotic factors) or nonliving variables (abiotic factors), such as
temperature,
rainfall,
day length,
wind, and
ocean currents.
How can an ecosystem be formed ?
The interactions of organisms with biotic and abiotic factors form an ecosystem.
Suggest examples of environmental factors that might adversely impact human health or the ecologic balances to long-term human health and environmental quality, which need to be protect against.

Once waste products are generated, they must be disposed of in one of three ways:
Incineration
Water discharge
Landfill or burial in soil
Each options presents problems in changing the waste product to a less toxic form, so prevention is desirable.

Exposure to most pollutants is harmful in larger doses, therefore dilution is often to solution.
Waste products can be diluted by moving them to larger mediums. E.g.,

However, planet’s capacity to assimilate by‐products of human civilization is not limitless.

what is PM2.5
While particles with a diameter of 10 microns or less, (≤ PM10) can penetrate and lodge deep inside the lungs, the even more health-damaging particles are those with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less, (≤ PM2.5).
Chronic exposure to particles contributes to the risk of developing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as of lung cancer.
what are the sources of PM2.5 ?
Sources may emit PM directly into the environment or emit precursors such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are transformed through atmospheric chemistry to form PM.

very high = 101-200
People with existing heart or respiratory illnesses may notice mild aggravation of their health conditions. Generally healthy individuals may also notice some discomfort.
what is the health implications for severe API (Air pollution Index)?
severe = 201-500
People with existing heart or respiratory illnesses may experience significant aggravation of their symptoms and there will be also widespread symptoms in the healthy population. These include eye irritation, wheezing, coughing, phlegm and sore throat.
what is the differences between Air quality Health Index (AQHI) and Air pollution index (API) ?
To provide more timely and useful air pollution information to the public, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) launches the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to replace the Air Pollution Index (API) from 30 December 2013.
The AQHIs are reported on a scale of 1 to 10 and 10+ and are grouped into five health risk categories
How is Air quality Health Index (AQHI) calculated ?
AQHIs are determined using the cumulative health risk from the 3-hour moving average concentrations of four key air pollutants:
- Ozone (O3)
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
- Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
- Particulate Matter (PM2.5 / PM10)
