Cranial cavity
formed by the flat bones of the skull and contains the brain
Orbit cavity
the space containing the eyeball, eye muscles, and optic nerve
Nasal cavity
the space deep to the visible nose
Oral cavity (mouth)
lined with a mucous membrane and contains the teeth, tongue, and salivary glands. The oral cavity is defined by the mandible, maxilla, and muscles of the face
Vertebral canal
the space within the vertebrae where the spinal cord resides
Thoracic cavity
defined by the vertebral column posteriorly, ribs laterally and sternum anteriorly. This cavity can be further subdivided into the mediastinum and pleural cavities.
Mediastinum
found on the midline and contains the heart, part of the trachea, part of the esophagus, and the great vessels carrying blood to and from the heart
Pleural cavities
there are two of these; each one contains one lung and is lined by a serous membrane called pleura.
Abdominal cavity
the largest of the body cavities and contains most of the digestive system organs
Pelvic cavity
inferior to the abdominal cavity and is defined by the bones of the pelvis; the organs of production and excretion are found in the pelvic cavity.
