Web Browser User Experience
The main parts of a web browser are practically identical and always in the same place, with minor differences.
Browser Appearance
Each browser looks just a little different, with differently shaped or arranged buttons.
Home Screen Design
Each browser has a different set of things that it shows you, such as bookmarks, recently closed windows, or frequently viewed sites.
Apps and Plugins
Chrome and Firefox have apps, plugins, and add-ons available which provide additional functionality beyond what the browser usually provides.
Rendering Engine
The sub-program inside the browser that translates code into a graphical page design that you can interact with.
Performance
Browsers can load pages faster or slower than other browsers.
Additional Features
Google Chrome allows you to sync your browser data between different computers, enabling you to access your bookmarks and history from anywhere.
Address Bar
A part of the browser where you can type the URL into the bar to navigate to a chosen website.
Navigation Buttons
Buttons that allow you to move through websites you've recently viewed; clicking and holding shows recent history.
Refresh Button
Reloads the current page; useful if a website stops working.
New Tab Button
Opens a new webpage in the same window, allowing multiple websites to be open within one main window frame.
Bookmark
A placeholder for a web page that allows quick access instead of browsing or searching for it.
Search Bar
The location within a browser that allows you to search the Internet.
Close Tab Button
Used to close the selected tabs.
New Tab Button (+ button)
Used to create new browser tabs within the same window.
Close Window Button
A part of a browser where you can close the application window you are currently working on.
The most used search engine today with the largest single catalog of webpages.
DuckDuckGo
Consider using this if you have issues about online privacy, since it doesn't track your searches.
Google Chrome
Easy-to-use, cross-platform browser, built to work very well with web apps, especially Google's own Gmail and Google Apps. The most-used browser today.
Mozilla Firefox
Free and open source, preferred by many developers and other tech workers.
Safari
The browser that ships with every installation of Apple's iOS, and only available on Apple devices.
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft's replacement for Internet Explorer, also available only on Windows.
Internet Explorer
The browser that ships with every installation of Microsoft Windows.
