Wind indicators

How do you issue surface wind?

The word “wind” followed by the separate digits of the indicated wind direction to the nearest 10−degree multiple, the word “at” and the separate digits of the indicated velocity in knots, to include any gusts

What wind sensors will be used and the reasons/procedures for any deviations from this?

Select wind sensors on the approach end of the runway unless operational advantage permits use of another setting. Pilots will be advised if the wind information is not being reported form the approach end of the runway, including information on the ATIS broadcast satisfies that requirement.

What is wind calm

Used when the wind velocity is less than 3 knots

What is wind estimated?

Will be used when wind displays are not available

What is varible wind?

Will be issued when observed, defined as a wind direction change of 60 degrees or more in the preceding 2 minutes, when the wind speed is greater than 6 knots.

What are gusts?

Are sudden, short-lived increase or decrease in wind speed that exceeds a defined threshold typically 10 knots or more. Will be visible on the AFAS after the displayed wind speed with a “G” right before the numbers.

What is Gust Spread?

Controllers should only issue Gust Spread if specifically requested by the pilot. Gust spread is defined as the difference between wind speed lull and wind speed peak during the preceding 10 minutes.
