I will be outlining how the abundant levels of littering and sever sanitation problems impact the surrounding rural area.
What does littering have an impact on?
The clean-up process, crop yield, and farm animal health.
How many tonnes of waste are left behind?
2,000 tonnes = 10kg per person
What is left behind?
Few thousand disposable tents, pegs, clothes, plastic water bottles, packaging…
What happens to the metal pegs?
They get chopped into pieces by the rotavators and eaten by cows, causing health issues.
How many litter pcikers?
1000 providing jobs for the local community
What sanitation problems are there?
Urination
How many toilets are there?
1,2000 compost toilets to be more eco friendly, less sewage and can be used as manure. 5000 regular toilets but not enough for all festival goers.
What problem does the urination cause?
Toxic pollution of the water table. Water runs into the central Whitelake River and for 4 miles further affecting wildlife.
Whos attention has been attracted?
Local Environmental Agencies who test the water regularly
What is being found in the water?
Levels of MDMA and cocaine found in the freshwater have quadrupled after the festival.
Who maintains the toilets?
Local uni studenst who also use them to collect data and use for studies. Also a 24 hour clean uo crew.
What charities help out?
Peace Garden, Premaculture, and WaterAid.
What could happen if there are no changes?
They could close down the festival
Personal opinion?
Urination because it is much harder to combat and is mainly up to festival goers to be responsible and have morals.
