Digital Natives
People who grew up in an era of ubiquitous technology; comfortable with digital media.
Media & Information Literacy (MIL)
Abilities to access, evaluate, create, and communicate information ethically using various media; aims to communicate effectively, critically, and creatively.
UNESCO
United Nations agency that promotes media and information literacy development worldwide.
Sign (language)
A form of communication using signs.
Expressions
Facial and body expressions used to convey information.
Spoken words
Oral language used to communicate ideas.
Through Media
Communication conveyed via media channels.
Goal of MIL
To enable effective, critical, and creative communication; to access, evaluate, share, and communicate knowledge ethically.
Sender
The information source that encodes and sends the message.
Message
Information, ideas, or emotions transmitted from sender to receiver.
Channel
The medium used to deliver the message (e.g., radio, TV, SMS, Internet).
Receiver
The person or audience who decodes and interprets the message.
Feedback
The response or reaction of the receiver to the message.
Noise
Interference that distorts or disrupts the communication process.
Physical Noise
External sounds or environmental distractions that hinder understanding.
Semantic Noise
Misunderstanding caused by unclear language or ambiguous words.
Psychological Noise
Mental or emotional factors that affect reception of a message.
Language
Spoken, written, or body language used to convey meaning.
Signifier
The form that a sign takes (sound, image, word, etc.).
Signified
The concept or meaning that the sign represents.
Denotation
Literal, explicit meaning of a sign or symbol.
Eye level shot
Camera at the subject’s eye height to create a neutral perspective.
Low angle shot
Camera positioned below the subject to make them appear powerful or dominant.
Dutch angle shot
Camera angle tilted to create a sense of disorientation or tension.
Pan
Horizontal movement of the camera from side to side.
Zoom
Changing the focal length to magnify or reduce the subject in the frame.
Key light
Primary, strongest light in a scene that shapes the subject.
Fill light
Light used to fill in shadows created by the key light.
Back light
Light placed behind the subject to separate them from the background (also called hair light in some setups).
Three-point lighting
Lighting setup using key light, fill light, and back light for balance.
Intellectual Property
Legal rights protecting creators’ works (copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret).
Copyright
Exclusive rights to original works; typically duration is lifetime plus many years after death.
Moral rights
Rights of attribution, integrity, and publication preference for the creator.
Economic rights
Rights to royalties and financial benefits from a work.
Patent
Exclusive rights for an invention; typically 20 years; requires novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability.
Trademark
A sign used to distinguish goods or services; protection is often 10 years, renewable.
Trade secret
Confidential information with commercial value; kept secret to maintain competitive advantage.

Illegal Access
Unauthorized access to computer systems or data.
Illegal Interception
Unlawful interception of data during transmission.
Data Interference
Unauthorized alteration or manipulation of data.
System Interference
Hindering or impairing the operation of a computer system.
Cyber-squatting
Registering domain names in bad faith to profit or harm others.
Unsolicited Commercial Communications
Spam or unsolicited promotional messages sent via electronic means.
Data Privacy Act (RA 10173)
Philippine law protecting personal data and governing its processing.
National Privacy Commission
Government body that administers and enforces the Data Privacy Act.
Right to be informed
Right to know what personal data is collected and how it will be used.
Right to Access
Right to obtain a copy of personal data held by organizations.
Right to Data Portability
Right to move, copy, or transfer personal data in a secure manner.
