What is development?
The pattern of movement and change that occurs throughout the life span.
What is the lifespan?
The period from conception to death.
Why study child development?
To raise/teach children; to inform social policy decisions; and to gain a general understanding of human development.
What is sociocultural context?
The influence of social and cultural factors on an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, including the settings in which development occurs (culture, ethnicity, SES, and gender).
What settings are listed as where development occurs?
Culture, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and gender.
What is resilience?
The ability to recover or adjust easily to misfortune or change and to maintain confidence despite serious obstacles.
What are the factors influencing resilience?
Three categories: individual factors, family factors, and extrafamilial factors.
Examples of individual factors that influence resilience?
Intelligence, sociability, confidence, and high self-esteem.
What is a family factor that supports resilience?
A close relationship to a caring parent figure.
What are extrafamilial factors in resilience?
Connections to adults outside of the family.
