Who were the patricians?
A small group of wealthy landowners that advised the king and controlled valuable land.
Who were the plebians?
Mostly peasants, craftspeople, laborers, and shopkeepers. They made of 95% of Rome’s population.
What was the relationship between the plebians and the patricians?
The plebians began to demand for more political power. This conflict escalated especially during times of war because the plebians were forced to be in the army even though the patricians decided when to go to war. The plebians eventually fled Rome to camp on a nearby hill, and without their army, the patricians feared that Rome would be vulnerable to attack, and they had no choice but to compromise.
How did Rome go from a Monarchy to a Republic?
Over time, the patricians came to resent Etuscan rule, soo they rebelled. They drove out the Estruscan King and created a republic.
Why was the Roman Republic at first ‘imperfect’?
Only patricians could participate in the government, and laws were not written down so people would often interpret them to benefit themselves.
