Slave Codes

Abuse

Physical, emotional, or harsh treatment, often used to control enslaved people.

Racism

Systemic or individual belief that one race is superior, often used to justify slavery and discrimination.

Middle Passage

The horrific Atlantic voyage where enslaved Africans endured overcrowding, disease, and abuse.

Triangular Trade

Trade network linking Europe, Africa, and the Americas, exchanging goods, enslaved people, and raw materials.

Overseers

Plantation managers who enforced labor and punished enslaved people to maintain productivity.

1739 uprising in South Carolina where enslaved Africans fought for freedom, resulting in many deaths.
