Define the Agricultural system.
The way in which a farm operates with inputs, processes and outputs in order to both make financial gain and look after environment.

Name the 8 main typed of agricultural systems/ farms.

ARABLE - Farms that cultivate crops and not involved with livestock.

MIXED - Both cultivate crops and keep livestock.

PASTORAL- Farming that involves in just keeping livestock.

COMMERCIAL- The objective to sell everything that is produced on the farm. Normally owned by TNCs and try and get as much profit as possible.

SUBSISTENCE - the practice of growing crops and raising livestock sufficient only for one's own use, without any means for trade.

organic/ non organic

extensive - Relies less on machinery for production of yield but more on the natural conditions of the environment.

intensive - uses machines, natural and artificial fertilisers, and uses the methods to produce the highest yield possible.

What is the Green Revolution?
Took place between, 1962 - 1987.
Dr Norman Borlaug came across to India from Mexico with high variety wheat.
This wheat was needed as the population in India was rising and they needed more food to feed the population.
They couldn't do it on their own as the wheat was not as healthy and would take ages to produce.

Characteristics of the wheat

with wheat that was drought resistant as India has wet and dry seasons, would have high yield variety with twice to four times greater than the traditional varieties, more sturdy with a strong structure and had increased income for Farmers.

- High inputs in fertiliser and pesticides which can be costly.
- Mechanisms have increased rural unemployment.
