Safety goggles
Protective equipment that must be worn when using chemicals, glassware, heat, or other dangerous materials.
Broken glass protocol
Students should let the teacher put broken glass into the correct container; it should not be handled by the student.
Laboratory environment behavior
Students must maintain a positive mindset, respect potential dangers, and never play around or misbehave.
Restricted consumption
Never eat, drink, or chew gum during a science experiment or lab.
Lab equipment utility
Items like beakers and flasks that should never be used as drinking vessels.
Pre-experiment inspection
The act of looking over equipment for cracks, problems, or other issues before beginning an experiment.
Fire and heat safety
Never reach over a flame or heated object, and keep hair and clothing away from flames.
Flammable chemicals protocol
Ensure there are no flames anywhere in the lab when using chemicals that could catch fire.
Experiment authorization
Only perform experiments that are approved by the teacher.
Instruction compliance
The requirement to follow both written and verbal instructions and ask for an explanation if something is not understood.
Chemical label protocol
Read all labels twice before using chemicals.
Leftover chemicals
Materials that must never be returned to the storage bottle.
Chemical mixing rule
Never mix chemicals together unless the directions specifically tell you to do so.
Acid dilution
A laboratory procedure where you always add the acid to the water when instructed to water down the acid.
Post-experiment hygiene
The practice of cleaning equipment and workspace and washing hands after any spills and at the end of each experiment.
Sink disposal restriction
Matches should never be put in the sink.
