leadership
the process of navigating change that enables leaders and followers to reach higher levels of accomplishment and self-actualization.
leadership: leaders and followers
not just about who they are leading but also the impact they’re making on their followers
leadership: process of navigating change
leadership differs depending on the context you are in, and we need to learn to navigate that!! people, environments, rules, etc. all changes leadership
leadership: accomplishment and self- actualization
are we reaching the goals that we set out to do? did they reach the goals they wanted to achieve? are the followers reaching their potential?
true or false: a lot of what it means to be a good leader depends on OUTCOME of their leading
true
leaders must…
consider the person-environment interaction
person-environment interaction
we are influenced by the environment we are in. we need to lead in a way that makes the environment less difficult to handle for our participants
the environment changes the person ! socially, physically, etc. and different people react differently to the same environment due to things like personality, viewpoints, other personal aspects or external benefits or challenges
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership
social and cultural factors
political factors
economical factors
technological factors
complexities of globalization
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership: social and cultural
Social isolation
General social trends (e.g., popular activities)
more popularity, would lead to more leaders offering more services
are we boycotting activities or supporting them? what is the current trend? (bouldering so popular rn but i think it might die downlmao)
Trend toward individualism (i.e., not a “one size fits all” approach)
LOTS more flexibility and adaptation with leisure programs nowadays
Aging population
An increasing proportion of individuals 65 and older
Recreation and leisure preferences of older people
different mobility requirements, and diff interests for older populations (e.g., less physically stressing activities, more options for lighter activity, maybe more non physical recreation (like bingo haha)
Diverse backgrounds and cultures
Different preferences and needs surrounding leadership, recreation, and leisure
people define leisure differently!
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership: political
Recreation and leisure programming may extend beyond local borders
trends and rules and others political issues transcned physical borders, and can therefore impact the way we offer services and lead programs!
Service provision may be impacted by the political leadership
new political impacts (laws, policies, differences in FUNDING ESPECIALLY, etc.) may be a obstacle for leadership in sport and recreation!
Leaders may need to navigate different politically-centered tensions (e.g.,“NIMBYs” supporters, competing viewpoints)
you can not make everyone happy with your decisions. your approach may not be supported by everyone, it all depends on the person viewing your program. but its important to not let that get in your way of leading to the best you can through all the tensions!
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership: economical
Funding as a barrier for programming (e.g., re-direction of funds)
The differing value of time and money
some ppl, when looking at leisure, some may value money over time differently because of factors, and vise versa.
e.g., some people may take longer to get to a destination because they value money over time, while others don’t care about how much money they spend beacuse it is faster / more valuable for the time they have
The differing value of work and leisure
some might view work because they have to, while others may view work as another form of engagement to their desired leisure / a way to get money for leisure. work for some, can be valued over leisure (and therefore less time spent for leisure) or vise versa, where their leisure time is more valued over work and they may work just to have leisure money
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership: technological
Quick responses are often expected
participants expect fast responses
easier to apply to services because of technology
More effective connection with stakeholders (e.g., other organizations, clients, government, partners)
Better program services due to information access (e.g., planning, design, delivery, evaluating, leading)
also! easier ability to receive feedback about leadership and therefore easier and better for improving leisure leadership and programs
can now access policies, more information, faster and more which makes leadership more easy to plan (BUT so do participants so be warned!)
Clients, workers, and participants are also more informed and have clearer expectations of what they expect and what options and information are available to them
be aware that participants have access to information too, which can lead to higher expectations and such which can make your job as a leader more stressful!
Leaders must be well versed in the use and application of technology
times are changing! more and more people are using technology to sign up for things, so we need to keep up!
factors affecting recreation and leisure services leadership: complexities of globalization
Impact of enhanced knowledge creation and mobilization
we have better and faster sharing of ideas and resources. we are NOT isolated with the rest of the world. connected to all the otehrs points!
More connected than ever across the world
which does then impact our leadership and the way we do things!
