Zoonotic Disease

An infection or infestation shared in nature by humans and other animals.

Pathogen

Any virus, microorganism or other that causes sickness.

Incubation period

The development without signs or symptoms, of an infection from the time an infectious agent gains entry until the appearance of the first signs or symptoms.

Aerosol

Liquid matter dispersed in air, gas or vapor in the form of fine mist.

Enteric

Relating to the intestine.

Reservoir of infection

Living or non living material in or on which an infectious agent multiplies and/or develops and is dependent for its survival in nature.

Fomite

An inanimate object that can carry diseases from animal to person, such as clothing.

PPE

Equipment worn to minimize exposure to a variety of hazards.

Zoonoses

Diseases transmitted from animals to humans, of which there are over 200 known types.

Cryptosporidium

A parasite with 19 species that has a tough outer shell, can survive for days, combines effects with intestinal viral and bacterial pathogens, and is associated with diarrhea in calves, lambs, kids, foals, piglets, and humans.

C. Hominis

The most common species of Cryptosporidium.

C. Parvum

A zoonotic species of Cryptosporidium that is most common in calves, present as oocysts in 70% of 1-3 week old calves.

Sheathers floatation and Sedimentation Staining

The most common and cost-effective microscopic diagnostic methods for Cryptosporidium.
