the nervous system can be divided into 2 parts:
central nervous system (C.N.S)
peripheral nervous system (P.N.S)
what is the central nervous system?
brain and spinal cord
processes information
what is the peripheral nervous system?
subsystem that contains all nerve pathways that communicate with CNS
(anything BUT the brain and spinal cord)
what is the afferent system?
receives input through receptors and carries it to the CNS
what is the efferent system?
carries signals from the CNS to effectors
whats the somatic system? ex
carries instructions to voluntary muscles
ex skeletal
whats the autonomic system?
carries info to involuntary muscles and glands
ex smooth muscles
whats the parasympathetic division?
stimulates “relaxation” during times of low stress
whats the sympathetic division?
stimulates “fight or flight” response during times of stress, danger, excitement or strenuous activity
